are seemingly endless in this quaint waterfront community, Virginia's only resort island. Swimming, boating, surfing, fishing, biking, crabbing, clamming, bird watching, and hiking are among them.

You'll also enjoy our many gift and craft shops as well as our fine seafood restaurants.

Assateague Island National Seashore includes thirty-seven miles of natural, beautiful beaches for you to explore and enjoy. During the summer, lifeguards oversee a section of the beach near the bathhouse. Changing stalls, toilet facilities, rinse-off showers, and drinking water are available at the bathhouse.

Outside the lifeguard protected area, you can enjoy surf fishing and even surfing (boards of all sizes are available for rent on Chincoteague). Or just fly a kite. And any time of year, there is nothing like a relaxing walk or a jog along the beach.

The Assateague lighthouse, operated by the U.S. Coast Guard, is open to visitors several times a year.

The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (on neighboring Assateague Island) is well-known to bird-watcher's - over 260 species of birds have been spotted. Enjoy a hike on one of the many trails, or explore the Refuge by bike (bikes can be rented near the entrance to the Refuge).

The Wildlife Refuge is also home to the Chincoteague ponies made famous by Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague. Each year in late July the ponies are rounded up by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company for the swim to Chincoteague and the auction on the Island's Fair Grounds.

On Chincoteague you'll experience elegant waterside dining and restaurants close to Island shops offering the finest of seafood, steaks, and other tasty dishes. Enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast, a crab feast, or scallops and shrimp with all the trimmings. And for a real treat, try one of the Island's fine ice cream parlors.

For the collector, decorative and antique waterfowl carvings and wildlife art are available. Antiques, hand-made pottery, country and folk-art crafts and Christmas specialty shops are abundant.

Sports activities - including miniature golf, go-carts, and pony rides - are available for all ages. A spacious town park, complete with tennis courts and modern playground equipment, offers waterfront recreation for everyone.

From the Island Motor Inn Resort, it's only a short drive to the Wallops Flight Facility, an operational NASA installation; the NOAA Wallops Command and Data Acquisition Station; and the U.S. Navy Surface Combat Systems Center. During your stay on our island, be sure to stop in at the NASA Visitor Center, located on the mainland just before the causeway and bridges that lead to Chincoteague.
